This ambitious multi-year initiative reimagined transport in Sydney’s CBD, anchored by the closure of George Street for Light Rail operations and the development of a new Metro line with CBD stations. The transformation catalysed significant private investment, triggering a surge in construction activity and reshaping traffic dynamics across the city centre. A key challenge was maintaining CBD accessibility during construction while preparing it for long-term success. Freight operations were particularly impacted by the loss of on-street loading zones, prompting the development of alternative delivery strategies and improved loading dock provisions. Lessons learned were captured in the Last Mile Toolkit informing current and future planning approaches in NSW and beyond.

Like many other cities, Sydney faces land use challenges. While the focus is on provision of housing, there are also significant shortages of Industrial land that impact the efficiency of freight activities and also lead to the growth of negative externalities. Planning for industrial land provision across the city and boosting the efficiency of freight can enable cost of living benefits and make a significant contribution to wider economic impacts. Government actions are now required to make changes to industrial land management that will improve freight efficiency and cost of living and other factors. The learnings are applicable to any city.

As part of the CBD transformation, a one-year pilot was launched to test a Microhub delivery model—an innovative approach for urban freight in dense environments. The trial proved successful and evolved into a long-term operation, now approaching its tenth year. The Microhub has delivered a benefit-to-cost ratio of 6:1 and continues to generate valuable insights for Sydney and other global cities exploring sustainable last-mile logistics.

During a period of rapid growth for commercial linehaul transport from Kuwait into Iraq, the business faced critical challenges in transport management, security tracking, asset visibility, and maintenance support. My role required immediate action: sourcing and implementing systems, refining operational processes, and prioritising safety-critical capabilities. Despite the complexity, the project achieved full asset visibility (up from 87%), a 3% boost in transport productivity, and a six-day improvement in billing cycles. Most importantly, process improvements directly contributed to saving lives in a high-risk operating environment.
